They say age is just a number, but turning 40 really does feel like hitting the top of a mountain you\u2019ve been climbing your whole life. You pause, take a breath, and look back at the twists and turns that got you here. The view hits different from up here, things feel clearer. So, as I stand at this milestone, here are 40 of the most important lessons I\u2019ve learned in 40 years. More than anything, the insights we learn are the real wealth we get to share with our friends and family. Hopefully, one or two of these will resonate with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Don\u2019t get stuck in the weeds and always work on the big picture.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. If it makes you feel uncomfortable, it\u2019s probably the right thing to do. Keep pushing yourself out of your comfort zone and you\u2019ll be surprised at how much you grow.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. Curiosity is one of your most profitable habits. Everyone has a different perspective that you can learn something from. If your goal is to be the best version of yourself, stay open to someone else\u2019s point of view.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. Accountability is your best tool. Whether for fitness, diet, or goals that you want to hit in your personal or work life, the more people holding you accountable, the better your chances of accomplishing it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  5. Time off always seems like the more attractive thing to do. It\u2019s important to refresh occasionally. But true freedom and pleasure will be found in accomplishing your goals and finding that one thing you can really be great at.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  6. A healthy mind is often found in a healthy body. Make sure you do something every day to maintain your machine.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  7. The choice of your spouse is the most important decision you will make in your life. Period!<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  8. Don\u2019t go down the rabbit hole of getting upset about the small things. The world is not perfect, people are not perfect, and neither are you. Keep your attention on what matters and move forward.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  9. Positive thoughts and energy are free and will have the greatest impact on your life, the people around you, and the results you get from life.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  10. Stay close to your goals and your vision. You need to clarify it regularly and keep it top of mind.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  11. It\u2019s never too late to get a fresh start. You become successful the moment you start committing to successful action.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  12. Being reliable and ethical will be one of your strongest assets. No matter how smart you are, or how skilled you are, it is nothing without trust.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  13. Hard situations can really bring the best out of you and are a perfect opportunity for learning.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  14. Don\u2019t take the praise of your immediate surroundings as the finish line. Praise is encouraging, but don\u2019t let it slow you down.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  15. Keep the right company. Nothing will lift you up or bring you down as much as the people you are in regular contact with.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  16. Many people grow older and bitter instead of better. Find older people that still have a positive outlook on the world and learn from them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  17. Consistency is the name of the game. Good habits of value-generating actions over a long period of time are what get results.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  18. Life is not all cake and candy. Doing things you don\u2019t feel like doing will be part of everyday if you are chasing something bigger.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  19. You need to be good at failing before you succeed. If you don\u2019t want to fail\u2026 that is unrealistic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  20. Create a schedule for yourself and try to stick to it as much as possible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  21. How you think will affect how you feel, how you feel will affect what you do, and what you do will affect you.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  22. Be thankful for the good people you have in your life. They are often taken for granted since they don\u2019t put you under any ultimatum or stress.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  23. Get up early, you will get 2\u20133 hours out of your day more than everyone else.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  24. Asking questions is a terrific way to communicate. Statements are closed, but the right questions can open your mind.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  25. Your fears can do a great deal of harm to you if you believe them to be true. They can hold you back and stop you from attempting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  26. Use your competitive nature to get further ahead.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  27. One win does not get you to gold. You need to replicate them day in, day out, month after month, year after year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  28. Time is not to be wasted. It will take a lot of it to accomplish anything of substance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  29. Your fears can do you a lot of harm if you believe them. But being able to take a step back and look at yourself, your fears, and your situation objectively can give you more power over your circumstances.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  30. How you take criticism can be your asset or your downfall. Sometimes you need to stand up for yourself, but sometimes there\u2019s something to learn.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  31. Make sure you underline important moments. The money can come and go, but those moments never come back.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  32. Investing early is important. Save and invest 10\u201315% of what you make every year.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  33. If you really want it, there\u2019s almost no way you won\u2019t get it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  34. Your mind is your greatest gift. Don\u2019t take it for granted, keep feeding it and helping it grow.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  35. Be mindful of the time you spend paying attention to social media, Netflix, or any type of screen entertainment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  36. Trust your instincts. Sometimes your gut knows more than you give it credit for.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  37. The moment you stop blaming other people or your circumstances, your power over your life will be much greater than you think.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  38. Commit to something in life and give it everything you have. Commitment will bring you much more happiness than indecision. <\/li>\n\n\n\n
  39. A healthy lifestyle is at the heart of personal success and happiness. Pay attention to what you eat, drink, and do on a regular basis, your habits will have a significant impact in the long run<\/li>\n\n\n\n
